From Side Hustle to Success Story

DJ Mikey D Season 1 Episode 2

Ever wondered what separates successful entrepreneurs from those who struggle? Drawing from over three decades in the DJ industry, I share the hard-won wisdom that transformed me from a side-hustling DJ to a successful business owner.

Remember those early days of building something from nothing? I certainly do. While working 50+ hours at my day job, I spent every night and weekend pursuing my dream. The frustration of finding business advice that didn't speak to entertainers and service providers drove me to create something better. My background—radio DJ, talent agent, headhunter, insurance agent—gave me a unique perspective on what works and what doesn't when building a business from scratch.

The truth about entrepreneurship isn't always pretty: those first few hundred dollars of profit are painfully difficult to earn. But here's the secret—once you cross that threshold, scaling becomes dramatically easier. My five key principles for success apply whether you're a mobile DJ or pursuing any other business venture: be patient (good things aren't fast or easy), invest early time in learning fundamentals, avoid the trap of trying to make money before building a foundation, strategically invest in information products, and ensure your business idea has genuine scaling potential. Think bigger than niche markets—ask yourself if your concept can truly grow.

Hey everyone, welcome to the Pro DJ Publishing Podcast. I'm DJ Mikey D, your host, publisher and guide on this journey to building your own successful business. You know I've been in the DJ industry for over three decades now, and it wasn't until the mid-90s that I really understood what it meant to be a professional mobile DJ, especially when it came to weddings, man. That's where you really learn about professionalism. Back in those early days, I was starving for knowledge. I read every motivational and business book I could get my hands on, but here's the thing Most most of them were written for tech companies or manufacturing businesses. Nothing really spoke to what we do as entertainers and entrepreneurs. My background was all over the place Radio DJ, talent agent, headhunter, insurance agent. But you know what? All those experiences shaped me into who I am today, and that's why I created Pro DJ Publishing for people like you who are working to build something for themselves.

Maybe you're like I was just wanting to make a few hundred extra dollars each month to give your family some breathing room. Let me tell you something those first few hundred dollars of profit, they're the hardest to make, but once you hit that milestone, scaling up to thousands becomes so much easier. I remember working a full-time job while building my business 50 plus hours a week, commuting and working, then spending every night and weekend on my dream. It was hard. I had setbacks, trust me, but I never quit. I just kept trying until things started working and when they finally did, man, there's no feeling like seeing your hard work start producing real results. That's what I want for you.

So let me share some quick tips that I wish someone had told me when I was starting out. First, be patient. My dad always said good things don't come easy or fast. You're going to put in a lot of work with no income at first. That's normal. Second, spend your early time reading about what matters financial literacy, marketing, sales strategies, productivity tools. Third, and this is big, don't waste time trying to make money right away. That's like putting the cart before the horse. Learn first, then earn. Fourth, invest in information products, e-books, tools. But remember, no single product will magically build your business. You still have to do the work.

Lastly, and this is crucial, have an end in mind. Your business idea needs to have scaling potential. If you're thinking about a specialized photo booth service for dogs, okay, that's a niche, but is the market big enough to make real money. Think bigger, my friends. Think about how you can ramp up your idea on a larger scale. Stay motivated by keeping up with our podcast, e-books and videos at ProDJPublishingcom. Sign up for our newsletter. We're here to help you succeed, whether you're in mobile entertainment or any other business. I wish you the absolute best. Remember think big, work hard and never quit.
